Like all councils in NSW, we implement outdoor alcohol restrictions in some locations in response to police and community requests that help prevent alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and crime in public places. They are established by council and enforced by the police.
Under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1993, Council has the authority to prohibit the possession and consumption of alcohol in public areas by proclaiming them as Alcohol Free Zones or Alcohol Prohibited Areas. Failure to comply with the prohibition could result in the alcohol being confiscated and disposed of by NSW Police and possibly other action taken.
Alcohol Prohibited Areas
Under section 632A of the Local Government Act 1993, Council has the power to create Alcohol Prohibited Areas in public parks, reserves or plazas. As anti-social behaviour often occurs during the evening hours, Council prohibits the consumption of alcohol at the following local parks between the hours of 8.00pm and 8.00am.
- Edgbaston Road Reserve – Beverly Hills.
- H.V. Evatt Park – Lugarno.
- Keppel Avenue Reserve – Webb Street, Riverwood.
- McGowan Reserve – Renway Avenue, Lugarno.
- Oatley Park - Oatley.
- Renown Reserve - Oatley.
- Ruby Wing Reserve – Universal Street, Mortdale.
- Stevens Reserve – Gungah Bay Road, Oatley.
- Woodville Park – Hudson Street, Hurstville.
Alcohol Free Zones
Under the provisions of Section 644 of the Local Government Act 1993, Council has the power to create Alcohol Free Zones along public roads and in public car parks. These zones are in place for a period of four years until 2026.
There are currently Alcohol Free Zones located in the:
- Hurstville CBD.
- Oatley shopping centre and surrounding streets.
- Penshurst shopping centre.
- Riverwood town centre.
- Kogarah CBD.
- Mortdale Morts Rd Shopping Area.
