Georges River Council was formed on 12 May 2016 from the amalgamation of Kogarah and Hurstville Councils. It encompasses the wards of:
- Blakehurst
- Hurstville
- Kogarah Bay
- Mortdale
- Peakhurst
Georges River Council is 17 kilometres from Sydney CBD, covering an area of 38 square kilometres. Primarily residential, it also features industrial, commercial, and recreational spaces.
Named after the Georges River, it serves as a key public transport hub for the St George region, boasting excellent train and bus access. Today, it is a vibrant multicultural community connected to over 50 countries.
At the September 2024 NSW Local Government elections, 15 Councillors were elected for the current term of Council. Councillor Elise Borg was elected Mayor and Councillor Nancy Liu Deputy Mayor.
