The CCTV system which operates across the Georges River area aims to achieve the following objectives:
- Deter criminal activity in the area
- Assist in providing information to the police in the possible identification of offenders and events
- Assist in any other legal proceedings
- Assist in the investigation of illegal dumping incidents
- Assist in providing a safer environment.
Cameras have been, or are scheduled to be, installed in the Hurstville CBD as well as the town centres in Kogarah, Carlton, Allawah, Penshurst, Mortdale, Riverwood, Narwee, Lugarno and South Hurstville.
The cameras are installed to help ensure residents, visitors and businesses in the local community feel safe and secure.
Council’s CCTV Program is partially funded by the Federal Government’s Safer Streets Programme which supports communities to address crime and anti-social behaviour, and boost crime preventative initiatives.
To access footage from council cameras, a report has to be made to the police; the police if necessary will then request the required footage from council.
