Council has a vital role in all stages of Emergency Management from prevention, preparedness, response and recovery for our Local Government Area.
Emergency management is a legislative requirement for Local Government; as a result, the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) was established.
The Committee consists of senior representatives from Emergency Service agencies and essential services operating in our local area.
The Committee is responsible for an all-agencies, all-hazards approach to planning, preparing, and testing the local community emergency management arrangements in the Georges River. This includes preparing plans in relation to the prevention, preparation, response, and recovery for emergencies in the Georges River Local Government Area.
This LEMC is responsible to the Sydney Metro Emergency Management Regional Committee.
What is the structure of the LEMC?
Councils are required to provide executive support facilities for the LEMC and the Local Emergency Operations Controller (LEOCON) in the Local Emergency Management Committee area.
Committee members include:
- A senior representative of Council who is the Chair of the LEMC and the Local Emergency Management Officer (LEMO).
- The Local Emergency Operations Controller (LEOCON). Currently a police officer stationed within our region.
- Local representatives of each Emergency Services and agencies with functional responsibilities operating in the Georges River Local Government Area.
Emergency Management Plan - EMPLAN
Emergency planning is undertaken to ensure that our community is ready in the event of an emergency.
The Georges River Local Emergency Management Plan (EMPLAN) has been prepared and issued by the Georges River LEMC in accordance with Section 29(1) of the State Emergency and Rescue Management Act 1989, as amended. The plan was endorsed by the Sydney Metro Regional Emergency Management Committee in 2022.
The Local Emergency Management Committee refer to the Local Emergency Management Plan which describes the arrangements to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.
