Celebrating WorldPride 2023


WorldPride is a massive celebration of LGBTQIA+ communities from around the world. With Sydney hosting the party in 2023, the Georges River community put on a suite of local events, proudly supported by Council.

We celebrated with inclusion-building activities and WorldPride events, as well the installation of a vibrant rainbow crossing, rainbow lights and more.

Rainbow Crossing and Light Display
Rainbow crossing for pride month at Hurstville


As part of Sydney WorldPride’s Rainbow City, Georges River Council is proud to celebrate and show support for its diverse community with an installation of a vibrant Rainbow Crossing on Forest Road, Hurstville.

The Rainbow Crossing will lead from Hurstville Train Station to Hurstville Plaza where rainbow lights will display at night.

The Rainbow Crossing and light display will playfully symbolise inclusive representation and the need to provide safe spaces for our LGBTQIA+ community. 

Screening – Opening Plenary Session, Sydney WorldPride Human Rights Conference

Join us for a special screening of the opening plenary session of the Sydney WorldPride Human Rights Conference. The conference will be the largest LGBTQIA+ Human Rights Conference ever to be held in the southern hemisphere.

Learn about the ongoing struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQIA+ community on a global scale and hear from inspiring activists and leaders.

The screening will be followed by an introduction to the library’s Pride Collection & Pride Book Club.

Pride Collection at the Library

Celebrate diversity with the Georges River Libraries Pride Collection. This collection showcases a wide range of stories that reflect different experiences and perspectives of the LGBTQIA+ community.

From heart-warming romance to powerful coming-of-age tales, the Pride Collection provides an opportunity to build empathy, understanding and allies in the community.

Pride Storytime

Celebrate Sydney WorldPride with special themed storytimes at Georges River Libraries. Suitable for children aged 3-5 years old.

Families come in all shapes and sizes, but the most important part of any family is love!

Join us as we read a selection of picture books from the Georges River Libraries Pride Collection and celebrate pride, diversity, and the joy of family.

Coming Out, Coming Home 愛. 回家

Hear from the Queer Chinese community of Australia and learn about their resilience and power. First-generation migrants, Australian-born Chinese community members and international students of all ages and identities share experiences in search of belonging, “coming out” and finding a “home away from home” through creative portraits.

Join a panel discussion “Where is home? Exploring Queerness & Chineseness: A newly coined Australian Community” including speakers Adrian Phoon (he/him) former Co-Chair of Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, Dr Shawna Tang (she/her) Lecturer in Gender Studies, Western Sydney University, Dr Judy Tang (she/her) neuropsychologist with years of advocacy in the areas of health and community care and Mr Benjamin Oh (he/him) Co-Chair of the GLBTIQ Intercultural & Interfaith Network (GIIN) and a Co-Convenor of the Asian Australian Rainbow Alliance.

Coming Out, Coming Home is presented by ANTRA (Australia and New Zealand Tongzhi Rainbow Alliance Inc.) in partnership with Melbourne-based boutique art studio Gentle Glacier Productions with a creative team led by award-winning writer, film director and photographer Arctic Qu. ANTRA is a non-profit empowering the Mandarin & Cantonese-speaking LGBTQIA+ communities in Australia.

Supported by Sydney WorldPride 2023 and Georges River Council.
