Georges River Council has secured $100,000 from the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Local Government Waste Solutions Fund to develop a Sustainable and Circular Economy Design Guide.
This initiative will transform construction practices across Council assets, embedding sustainability and circular economy principles into every phase of design, construction, and operation.
The Design Guide will serve as a practical tool for placemakers, engineers, and design teams, offering actionable insights to incorporate recycled materials, reduce waste, and apply a whole-life-cycle approach to projects. A key aim is to significantly increase the use of recycled content by governments and industries, supporting the NSW EPA’s Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy.
The project includes the development of a decision-making tool to assist stakeholders in making environmentally responsible choices. The guide will be applied in Council developments and is expected to be completed by June 2026, with a pilot case study planned to test its real-world application on a local infrastructure project.
Funded as part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable materials management, the guide will enhance Georges River Council’s commitment to creating resilient, inclusive, and eco-friendly spaces. It will also be shared with other councils across NSW to ensure scalability and widespread impact.
This project is a NSW Environment Protection Authority Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy initiative, funded from the waste levy. For more information on the
