Georges River Council has recently installed hook and line bins at two popular fishing spots at Tom Uglys Bridge and Sans Souci Park Fishing Pier, Sans Souci in the Georges River Local Government Area (LGA).
A collaboration with the NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI), the new bins have been installed as part of a 12-month trial which will monitor their usage and encourage feedback from the community.
With fishing-related litter being identified as an environmental threat, these bins have been installed to offer a simple disposal solution for waste fishing line and tackle. If used correctly, they may help reduce the risk of litter making its way into waterways and harming local fauna and marine life.
Designed to allow for correct disposal of fishing line and tackle waste, the bins are made from 100% recycled material. They aim to create awareness on the issue of recreational fishing litter and encourage individuals to do the right thing and dispose of their waste responsibly.
Georges River Council Mayor Sam Elmir said: “These new hook and line bins are a wonderful initiative to limit fishing waste and remind our community to dispose of it correctly.
“Keep an eye out for these bins when you are out fishing. Disposing of your unwanted fishing line and tackle waste appropriately will help keep our LGA clean and keep our wildlife out of harm’s way,” added the Mayor.
