After the success of the first of four E-Waste and Extras Drop-Off events, Georges River Council is excited to announce that the next expanded e-waste recycling event will be Mortdale Depot on Saturday 3 February 2024.
The Mortdale Depot E-Waste and Extras Drop-Off day follows the highly successful inaugural event held at Carlton Depot on 4 November, which saw an unprecedented turnout and a significant amount of waste responsibly recycled.
The Carlton Depot drop-off event marked a milestone for Georges River Council, with a record-breaking 740 cars participating throughout the day, surpassing all previous e-waste events at that depot.
Throughout the day, residents dropped off approximately 17,000 kg of e-waste, 12m³ of expanded polystyrene (EPS), 10m³ of cardboard, and 20m³ of hard plastics such as plant pots and milk crates.
“Thank you to everyone who discarded e-waste, cardboard, and plastics at Carlton Depot. The success of our first E-Waste and Extras Drop-Off event is a testament to the passion and dedication of our Waste Team and our community,” said Georges River Mayor Sam Elmir.
“Our community’s dedication to recycling is more than just an environmental gesture; it’s a powerful statement about the kind of world we want to leave for our future generations. By recycling hard plastics and e-waste, we are actively reducing our ecological footprint.
“Each item we recycle, be it a plastic chair or an old electronic device, means less waste being sent to landfill and takes us a step closer to a sustainable world. Our actions today in recycling these materials carves a path for a more sustainable future.
“In Georges River, we recognise the importance of recycling, not just as an environmental responsibility, but as a community commitment to sustainability. By increasing the community’s opportunity to recycle materials like hard plastics, we are taking proactive steps towards a greener future.”
The initiative, driven by Council's Waste Team, received a boost from a NSW EPA Local Government Waste Solutions Fund grant. These grants are part of the NSW Environment Protection Authority Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy initiative, funded from the waste levy. This funding enabled the collection and recycling of additional items at four of Council's quarterly e-waste recycling events.
