Georges River Council is close to completing the demolition, remediation and landscaping of the former Kogarah War Memorial Pool site as set out in the May 2021 Development Application.
Once Council receives appropriate signoff of the remediation work, the community will be able to access the passive open space area which includes turf, landscape planting and picnic facilities, as set out in the South Sydney Planning Panel Development Conditions, while the development of a new aquatic facility progresses.
As a condition of the Development Application (DA), Council was required to develop a temporary carpark, open on weekends and public holidays, off Carlton Crescent to reduce impact while the Carss Park Flats carpark was closed. The temporary carpark site must now be restored to community open space in order to comply with the approved DA conditions and close out the demolition and remediation project.
Georges River Council General Manager David Tuxford said, “The demolition and remediation of the former pool site has reduced community risk while providing new temporary open space as work progresses on a future Carss Park aquatic facility.”
Georges River Council has been working towards the construction of a new aquatic facility at the Carss Park site in partnership with the NSW Office of Sport.
Council has ensured that the landscaping required by the Development Consent can be adapted once construction of any future aquatic facility begins, while allowing the community to use this open space as designs and approvals are completed for a new aquatic facility.
