Magpies

Magpies are a native, protected species and their iconic warbling call is part of the Australian landscape. They help control pests in our gardens and urban areas. Magpies are a protected species and it is an offence to harm them.

Some Australian Magpies are known to swoop pedestrians and cyclists in the area of their nest to protect their young.

Please note that it is an offence to harm a native animal under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 so Council does not consider removing swooping magpies. In the extreme event of a magpie repeatedly physically injuring members of the community, a permit must be obtained from National Parks and Wildlife Services to capture the magpie.

What is Council Doing?

During the Magpie breeding season between August and November, Council focuses on educating the community with signage and our Magpie Factsheet to provide information on Magpies and tips to avoid being swooped.

If you are experiencing repeated swooping from a Magpie protecting it's young, please avoid the area.

If a Magpie happens to injure you or your family, please seek medical treatment and advise Council's Environmental Sustainability and Waste team by phone on 02 9330 6400 or by emailing mail@georgesriver.nsw.gov.au.
